The Central Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan University Archives is coordinating with the Beaumier Upper Peninsula Heritage Center and the City of Marquette Arts & Culture Center to host four weeks of events to celebrate American Archives Month. Also called, National Archives Month, this 30-day celebration was designed to celebrate the American Record and the people and places working to preserve that record and provide access to the history it documents. Archives all over the nation will be participating!
Each week of NMU’s celebration will focus on a different theme, including several presentations, a concert, a family heritage exchange and a folk dance. All of our events are free and opened to the public! We will also be posting fun facts and photos every day on our social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and our Website.) Our themes and events are as follows:
Week 1: Family Heritage and Genealogy Week will be held in honor of National French-Canadian Heritage Day on Oct. 4th. The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center will be presenting a concert by the Quebecois folk group, Mil, at the Reynolds Recital Hall on the campus of NMU. –7:00pm, Thursday, October 3rd @ the Reynolds Recital Hall
On Friday, the group Mil will be conducting workshops at some local schools in Marquette, MI. That evening the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center and City of Marquette Arts & Culture Center will be hosting a French Canadian family history exchange event and folk dance. The event is open to the entire public, but people of French Canadian heritage are encouraged to bring family photo albums and genealogical information to share with others at the event. Week 2: Women’s ‘Herstory’ Week will culminate in a presentation by the Grace H. Magnaghi Visiting Research Grant recipient, Kathy Warnes. Kathy will be presenting on her research on the Julia K. Tibbitts Collection at the CUP and NMU Archives. The collection documents the environmental activism of Julia Tibbitts and her struggle to protect Marquette’s historic Presque Isle. –6:00pm, Thursday, October 10th @ the Central U.P. and NMU Archives
Week 3: Upper Peninsula Environment Week during which, we will host a presentation by Grace H. Magnaghi Visiting Research Grant recipient, Camden Burd. Camden will be presenting on his research on Henry H. Schoolcraft and Schoolcraft’s discussion of the environment of the Upper Peninsula. He will also discuss his thesis research on the role of the environment in the push for U.P. Statehood. Those who attend this event will get a sneak peek at the Beaumier Heritage Museum’s new exhibit on the Environment of the Upper Peninsula. The exhibit official opens on October 26th, and showcases the connection between the people of the U.P. and their environment and how that environment has shaped the culture of the U.P. –6:00pm, Thursday, October 17th @ the Beaumier U.P. Week 4: NMU Recreation Week will feature our regular Evening at the Archives presentation with the NMU Recreation Department in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the National Intramural Recreation Sports Association (NIRSA). We will look at the recreation facilities at Northern over time and the faculty, staff, and students who made them worthwhile.
