The Northern Tradition is a blog that appreciates Northern Michigan University’s past and present. The purpose of this blog is two-fold:

  • To expose NMU students to historical resources on campus and the wealth of primary sources available to them
  • To promote pride in NMU by illustrating Northern’s rich, diverse history in a thorough way that encourages critical thinking of the past but also the present

Posts on The Northern Tradition generally fall into one of three categories: examining NMU’s history, learning more about the Central Upper Peninsula and NMU Archives, and exploring the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center. The Archives and Beaumier Center both have representatives who write their posts, which typically have the name of the student at the end of the post. NMU history posts are written by English graduate student Lucy Hough.
